Smith Shop Seeks Intern

For Immediate Release
July 15, 2024

Smith Shop, a celebrated Detroit-based metalsmithing studio, is now accepting applications for full-time interns to begin in the Fall of 2024. Applicants should have a solid technical foundation in jewelry making, hollowware, and/or blacksmithing. In addition to a demonstrated metalsmithing proficiency, the successful candidate will be able to manage tasks independently, communicate effectively, and demonstrate a strong desire to learn. Smith Shop seeks applicants who would like to contribute to a community oriented studio that executes commission and production work, offers classes and workshops, and facilitates a larger metalworking community in Detroit. A BFA in metals or two years of equivalent experience is preferable.

Interns will be required to work 35 hours per week on Smith Shop projects and will be encouraged to develop their own artistic work in off hours. Interns will have 24-hour studio access and be able to take free classes. A modest housing stipend is available for those relocating to Detroit. Paid teaching opportunities are available for qualified candidates. The internship is a three-month term with the possibility to extend the term after a performance review. In general, the terms of the internship are flexible and will be negotiated during the interview process. Interns should plan to arrive in Detroit by September 15.

To apply, please send letter of interest, 5-10 images of recent work, CV and names + contact info of two references to info@smithshop.com by August 15, 2024.
